Yeah....prime time for moving, don't you think? Ladies out there, never let your husband move you during your 3rd trimester. It was awful.
Thankfully, we had TONS of help from family and friends, otherwise I think our child would be sleeping in a box instead of a crib.
One of the things that literally got pushed to the side during the move was our kitchen table. Our house is small, cozy if you will. So at the time, my main concern was getting the baby's room done and getting everything put away so I wasn't tripping over things in the middle of the night. Hense, why our kitchen table was shoved up against the wall and never put to use.
Well, now it's February, and I obviously forgot about our table because as of yesterday it was still shoved up against the wall.....and we've been eating on table trays ever since. So, yesterday I pulled this sucker out, cleaned it top to bottom, pulled out the leafs, rearranged a little and what do you know, our kitchen table is back.
Of course when my husband came home from work, he walked by it and didn't even notice.
I am now happy to announce we had our first meal there last night. It feels so good to actually SIT at a table. Now, I know some of our meals will still be had in the family room, on the couch, with tray in tough, but this is a start!
A little background about this table....it is a true hand-me-down. My parents ordered it from the JC Penney's catalog back in the 70's. It has been moved more times that I can count and recovered almost just as much (thanks Mom!). I think there is something to be said for furniture made "back in the day". It has held up well.
I've almost forgot this is a food blog. Sorry.
A couple of weeks ago, I made my first batch of scones. Ever had one? Now, this was from a box mix that I've had in my cupboard for longer than I probably want to admit....but looking at recipes online it seems that these would be easy to make on your own as well. I added some mini chocolate chips (for good measure).
This recipe is adapted from allrecipes.com
Mini Chocolate Chip Scones
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar (I'd use agave nectar instead)
5 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk
1/2 cup white sugar (I'd use agave nectar instead)
5 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter
1 egg, beaten
1 cup milk
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in butter. Mix the egg and milk in a small bowl, and stir into flour mixture until moistened. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and knead briefly. Roll dough out into a 1/2 inch thick round. Cut into 8 wedges, and place on the prepared baking sheet. Bake 15 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.
These were delicious, melt in your mouth good. After mine were done baking, I kept a few out (for our eating pleasure) and then individually wrapped the rest in plastic wrap and stuck them in the freezer. Very easy to enjoy at a later date!
Do you eat at our dining room/kitchen table every night?
I really like that you did an "ode to my kitchen table" type post! I too have a kitchen table that is decades old and has so much nostalgic meaning for me. And you're right- they don't make tables like they used to- this baby is solid! haha.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous mini scones!
I don't really feel like I've truly eaten a meal unless I've eaten it at the kitchen table.
ReplyDeleteYou're lucky to have it back!
Ally - I make sure we ALL eat together at the table. When the basement was being finished I told Mark the TV goes down stairs cause we will NOT be watching TV during dinner time. And I got my way :) Dinner time is at the table talking about the days events! I can't wait to eat at your table!
ReplyDeleteAnd Jana, I can't wait to have you guys come eat at our table! I'm getting very excited about you visiting...it will be a tight squeeze but we'll make it fun!
ReplyDeleteI only recently started reading but I think I'd love to eat at your kitchen table ;-) Sadly I don't get to - so for now, I eat at my own table - most of the times we eat at our kitchen counter (which is not "table like" but instead has the days clutter on it), but every now and then we eat at the table and I love it. I completely agree, they don't make furniture like they used to. Sturdy, able to be moved, able to be loved and withstand daily life... *sigh*
ReplyDeleteafter reading "french women don't get fat" i make a point to sit down at our dining room table for every dinner!
ReplyDeleteWe eat 9 out of 10 meals at our kitchen table.. there is that one time that somehow we end up eating at the coffee table.
ReplyDeleteI love the table! Good job setting it up! And I totally agree about furniture made "back in the day" - this new stuff just falls apart.
ReplyDeleteI've only made scones once and yours are beautiful!
Ugh. I moved in with a man who had been living on his own for about 8 yrs. Very stuck in his ways and the entire house was a "man-cave" for his computer gadgets, PCs, friends games and computers they play over here weekly, and tools. We spent the first two weeks of me living here clearing out room by room to get tools and computer pieces in order and find places for me to put my toiletries and clothes. Down the road one of the changes we made was to take this bedroom, which at the time had 4 desks w/ 4 computers in it for their game days and turn it into my office b/c I was sick of seeing it as wasted square footage that sat unused 6.5 days of the week. The compromise was moving those 4 desks into our DINING ROOM! So now we either eat on the couch w/ plates in our laps or at the counter. Not ideal, but I have my own space now - so it's a payoff!
I am such a sucker for scones, those look fantastic...absolutely fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI WISH I ate at my kitchen table - I try to make it a priority, but we usually end up on the couch. I just need to buckle down and do it.
My husband and I eat on the coffee table in front of the TV most nights. Our kitchen table is filled with his school work and both of our laptops. When we have a family I am definitely going to do my best to eat at the table every night!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on having the table back, it is one of the best things to make a house feel like a home!
