Our weekend recap (with lots of food!)
Saturday night we headed to Williamsburg, Iowa to a restaurant called Meyer's Grill. What an establishment. This is the exact type of place you'd see on the Food Network show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. It would probably fit into the "dive" category. The walls were covered in graffiti - a.k.a - customer's signatures. Here is my nephews...
They served everything from shrimp, salmon, fish, to huge steaks and pasta. And did I mention it was BYOB? Yep, you cart in your own cooler of your preferred beverage. My family (all 13 of us) were stuck along a wall in this cramped dive - but honestly it was homey! Here's a pic of my hubby's "all you can eat" barbecue pork ribs.
I think this was plate 3. He asked for a 4th, but either our waitress forgot or we missed it as we were being rushed out. Yes, this was a busy place, another group was scheduled to be at our table at 7 p.m. This place also gives you a FULL view of the kitchen, nothing is in hiding. Which actually I find kinda neat. Definitely a place to go for something "different". Good food, good times!
So, as I mentioned we had to choke down our food which didn't give us time to have dessert. So we asked our waitress if there was a local establishment (um...bar, classy moment #1) where we could go and have our cake. We were celebrating 3 birthday's in the family, and thankfully she directed us to one just up the street.
She even called the Dollar Store for me because I forgot the little man's bottle (mother of the year!) As everyone else drove to the bar, we headed to the Dollar Store at 7 p.m. on a Saturday night to buy a bottle (yep, classy moment # 2).
After my husband struggled to make a bottle in our backseat in the dark, and we changed little man's diaper on the floor of the bar (classy moment # 3, it was clean, I swear), we finally joined the others for cake. Now, as said in a previous post my mom always makes our birthday cakes. Earlier in the week she send our requests for what the birthday people wanted. This is what we got.
It was heavenly. Ever had a Hostess Swiss Cake Roll? Imagine that x 10. Recipe is to come, I promise! (Mom, if you are reading this, please send ASAP).
Well, after 3 (almost 4) plates of ribs, the hubs just couldn't fathom eating cake, so we packed up a slice for him to-go style. His food must have digested quickly, as we weren't even out of town and it was 1/2 gone. All the while eating without a fork - yep, he used his fingers...in the dark...on the interstate...and enjoyed every bite. It really was quite impressive to watch (thankfully, I was driving).
So an eventful Saturday night, a pretty uneventful day yesterday and back to the grind today.
Here's a look as to what is coming this week!
- Chocolate Bavarian Torte (mom's cake)
- Chicken Pot Pie (which I never got to last week)
- Barbecue Chicken with Roasted Broccoli (which I also didn't get to)
- Garlic & Parsley Roasted Potatoes
- Homemade Baby Food 101
Have a great Monday everyone! Sorry, for such a long post...
Really enjoy your blog Alli. You always have some fun ideas to put some variety in your family's dinner. We went to Meyer's Grill for my birthday this year and LOVED it! Great specials and you're right they have a good atmosphere. No one blinked an eye when Jacque got out the Jello shots :)
