Do you have any distinct meal memories growing up?

Although both of my parents worked, my Mom always, always had a meal on the table come dinnertime {except for that one night of the week dedicated to frozen pizza}. Sometimes it was breakfast for dinner, sometimes it was a fancier roast with mashed potatoes, but one thing was always a staple.

Milk.

All of us kids always drank milk with every meal.

So needless to say, once I left for college and was out on my own, milk followed me! And as I started cooking and baking, milk was again included. Once I got married and started having kids our milk consumption went WAY up!

I remember when I had toddlers {three kids under the age of 5} we were purchasing 3 gallons of milk a week. It was our comfort drink of choice. Now that our kids are older {11, 9 and 6} we are no longer filling sippy cups on the daily with milk, but it still graces my cooking and our table.

For this recipe I purchased my milk at Target. Oh ,the memories of buying multiple gallons back in the day!

Make sure you grab a gallon to include in your meals when planning breakfasts and dinners for your family and, of course, for this fun breakfast casserole like this one.

Just look at this bite!

Incorporating dairy into your meals is EASY and VITAL in fueling wellness needs for your family. Dairy foods provide a powerful nutrient package with three essential vitamins for immune function found in milk - vitamin A, vitamin D and protein.

I mean, look at how using a simple milk and egg combination makes this amazingly delicious Christmas Morning Croissant Streusel Bake!

The holidays are nearing and comfort food is a must while we are gathered around the table with our family and close friends. It's a time when being at home is a priority and good meals are the mainstay.

We absolutely loved this breakfast dish!

Let's be honest, buttery croissants will make anything taste remarkable. Milk, half and half, eggs, vanilla, brown sugar, chopped pecans, butter, icing and more. All of this comes together and your house will smell amazing while you are busy opening gifts on Christmas morning.

The ease of this breakfast dish also gets high marks. You assemble it the night before and with just a little bit of streusel prep in the morning before placing it in the oven - making it easy!

Serve this with a side of fresh fruit, bacon or your favorite baked egg dish and Christmas morning breakfast is set! It will become a yearly tradition.

This overnight crossiant breakfast casserole is perfect for Christmas morning! Assemble the day before and pop in the oven while opening presents. Decadent and delicious!

Ingredients

  • 1 stick unsalted butter, cold
  • 8 large crossiants, broken into pieces
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 cups 2% milk + add'l 3-4 T for icing
  • 1 cup half & half
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 t vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 t almond extract
  • 1 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9x13 rimmed baking pan with cooking spray and set aside.
  2. Break apart the crossiants into bite-sized pieces and arrange them into the pan, overlapping.
  3. In a large bowl whisk the eggs. Then adding in the milk, half and half, sugar and vanilla extract, again whisk to combine. Evenly pour this mixture over the broken crossiants. Cover and refrigerate overnight.
  4. In the morning preheat the oven to 375 degrees. While preheating remove the pan from the fridge and let it stand at room temperature for 30 minute.
  5. In a large bowl combine the brown sugar, chopped pecans, flour and salt. Using a cheese grater, grate the cold butter into this bowl. Using your fingers toss and combine this mixture until blended and crumbly. Sprinkle the streusel over the crossiants.
  6. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes or until browned and the center is set (not jiggly). Let cool for 10-15 minutes.
  7. In a small bowl combine the powdered sugar, almond extract and one tablespoon of milk at a time until it becomes a thin glaze. Drizzle the glaze over the crossiant bake right before serving.
  8. Store any leftovers covered in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat leftovers.

Notes

Any nut can be used in this dish, we just love chopped pecans - or they can be omitted if you have a nut allergy - but we love that added crunch!
