The cooler temps have finally arrived here in the Midwest and I'm here for it! Undeniably my favorite season, this weather gives me an excuse to drag out the comfy sweatshirts and start making more comfort meals for my family.
As a busy family of five with three kids in multiple sports and activities I try my hardest to make sure they are coming home to a warm dinner. We might be eating it in shifts and at odd times, but nonetheless it is warm and comforting!
Filling up their bellies with fun dishes is a priority and today's new recipe will knock your socks off.
In this house we love dairy. You'll find it in so many of my recipes. Real dairy is a source of nutrients important to a healthy immune system like Vitamin A, Vitamin D and protein.
Whether it be cow's milk, creamy cheeses, yogurt or butter - our family likes it all! And it makes the BEST creamy dinner dishes.
This new and fun Baked White Spaghetti is really exactly how it sounds. Instead of a traditional "red" sauce baked spaghetti, this version combines milk, eggs and cheeses for the ultimate white sauce. An added bonus? A generous amount of seasoned sautéed chicken and mushrooms. Throw that all together and we have one mighty fine dish.
There is just something fun about layering together a casserole. Every layer has a piece to the puzzle and without the other it just wouldn't end right. And by using cow's milk for this dish it creates a delicious, nutritious and easy way to incorporate dairy into another great family meal.
In this case you layer cooked spaghetti noodles, loads of Monterey Jack shredded cheese, perfectly cooked chicken and mushrooms, then do it all over again. THEN, you pour over the creamy white sauce made of milk, eggs, a little flour for thickening and seasonings.
Let me tell you what - it's heavenly!
After baking to perfection - it's a bit of a challenge to give it 10 minutes to "rest". You'll want to dig in right away!
Over the years I've made a TON of dishes similar to this one - ones that have layer upon layer of flavor and gets double thumbs up from the family.
Here are a few popular favorites from years past.
Just look at that creaminess!
My family absolutely went bonkers for this dish. We happened to have my father-in-law visiting at the same time and he also gave it rave reviews! Serve it alongside a salad or fresh bread and I promise your family will gobble it down.
Also - please note - because people ALWAYS ask - I added mushrooms to this dish because mushrooms always feel right to me in a casserole, especially with a creamy, milky white sauce. BUT, if you don't like mushrooms you can certainly omit them. It will still taste great!
Dairy is good for you and made with care from the planet. From the farm to the fridge, U.S. Dairy is taking steps to reduce food waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Just another reason I love to use it in family dishes once the weather turns chilly.
Are you ready to give this baked spaghetti a try?
I already know my family has requested that it be placed in our "meal rotation". All three kids gave their approval. That's a win for me!
Once you try this dish I would love for you to leave a star rating on the recipe card below. That helps other readers to know just how great it is! And if you plan to make it for a gathering or to deliver on the doorstep of a friend be sure to include a copy of the recipe as well.
